The Thangathi Coffee Factory, located in Nyeri County, Kenya, benefits from the Aberdare Range’s elevations between 1,600 and 1,750 meters above sea level, ideal for high-quality Arabica coffee production. Owned by about 750 smallholder farmers in the New Gikaru Farmers Cooperative Society, established in 2001 and now with over 4,600 members, the factory operates five wet mills: Ichamara, Thangathi, Thangathi, Kahuro, and Kiuu. The fully washed method enhances clarity, cleanliness, and vibrant acidity. Harvesting occurs from May to July and October to December, with processed coffee typically packed in 30 kg bags for export. Sustainability is a key focus, encouraging environmentally friendly practices and training in Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) for soil management, pest control, and proper harvesting. The coffee blend includes well-known Kenyan varieties like SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11. SL28, selected in the 1930s, is valued for its drought tolerance and complex, sweet profile with wine-like undertones. SL34, another historic selection, is admired for its rich body and balanced acidity but requires careful management due to its susceptibility to disease.
